Our farmers produce more than one tonne of green coffee per hectare of farmland, which corresponds to approximately 863 kg of roasted coffee per hectare.
1 Espresso = 7 g of roasted coffee.
THE CALCULATION
We calculate the share of one hectare of land needed to produce one espresso by dividing 7 g (0.007 kg) by 863 kg. Multiplying this share by the number of square centimeters in one hectare, which is one hundred million, gives us 811 cm² of land needed to produce one espresso.
However, since it is not enough to simply plant a tree — the tree must also be cared for and allowed to grow — and we cannot assume that all positive effects can be attributed to the first year, we assume a growth period of 10 years for the agroforest, meaning we must divide the result by 10. So we have 811 cm² divided by ten. We sell no more than 863 kg of coffee per hectare of land farmed in partnership with us, so that your impact remains measurable.
In detail, the calculation looks like this:
1 espresso = 7 grams of roasted coffee
7 grams of roasted coffee = 8.4 grams of green coffee
At least 1,040 kg of green coffee are grown per hectare of land (often twice as much).
1,040 kg = 1,040,000 grams
8.4 grams / 1,040,000 grams = the share of one hectare of land needed to grow one espresso = "P".
One hectare has an area of 100,000,000 square centimeters = "H".
P x H = the area needed to grow one espresso
P x H = 811 square centimeters
Divide by 10 years = 81 sq cm of transformed land per cup of coffee
