THE COFFEE JOURNEY
Approximately 15 % of the world´s coffee is produced on around 1 million hectares of land in the global biodiversity hotspot of Brazil´s Atlantic Forest, almost all of it in industrial monocultures. Coffee monocultures emit greenhouse gases and exclude nature. Farming now takes up so much land that species are becoming extinct at 1000 to 10,000 times the normal rate according to the WWF. There's a way of farming that can support nature but it's more work for farmers. Certifications aren't bridging this gap effectively because they load risks and costs onto farmers and these mean that farmers often lose out by trying to farm sustainably.
