THE COFFEE JOURNEY

Approximately 15 % of the world´s coffee is produced on around 1 million hectares of land in the global biodiversity hotspot of Brazil´s Atlantic Forest, almost all of it in industrial monocultures. Coffee monocultures emit greenhouse gases and exclude nature. Farming now takes up so much land that species are becoming extinct at 1000 to 10,000 times the normal rate according to the WWF. There's a way of farming that can support nature but it's more work for farmers. Certifications aren't bridging this gap effectively because they load risks and costs onto farmers and these mean that farmers often lose out by trying to farm sustainably. Read Geraldo's story on our Team page to understand why our work connecting farmers to coffee drinkers makes all the difference. But first:

Curu contracts the whole supply chain directly from the farm. This is called vertical integration. Our farmers bring our coffee to our partner mill . There the coffee is sorted and bagged and loaded into containers to be shipped for us to our partner roaster. This means the influence of the consumer is direct, you´re working with us, working with the farmers, working to solve the system to help farmers and nature in crisis.
